EDITING ATTRIBUTES

There are two attribute editing dialog modes the detailed editor that will edit up to eight attributes in one block and the standard AutoCAD attribute editor which will handle any blocks that have more than eight attributes in it. The AutoCAD editor allows only the text value of the attributes to be edited while the detailed editor (shown below in the sample syntax) allows the most commonly changed properties of each attribute to be edited.

SAMPLE (Attribute editing) COMMAND SYNTAX:

Command: TE
Command: TXTEDT

Select attributes, text, mtext, dimensions, hatching, attdefs, APS architectural symbols, doors (in plan), or windows (in plan):

Select attributes, text, mtext, dimensions, hatching, attdefs, APS architectural symbols, doors (in plan), or windows (in plan):

Select one or more attribute blocks. Remember if you select more than one block they all must be copies of the same block otherwise they will be excluded from the editing. For this example we will select a building section callout as shown above. It has three attributes. Select the block and press <Enter> or <Space> and the following dialog appears:

You will notice that there is a separate set of properties for each of the attributes in the block chosen. In this case since our block had three attributes in it three sets of properties are shown. You will have this ability for blocks with up to eight attributes in them. If the block has more than eight attributes then it will be edited in the standard AutoCAD attribute editor and you will only be able to edit the attribute's text values.

Since our block has only three attributes you may edit the text value, height, style, color, and lineweight for each of the attributes. You might notice that the text value has a box under it labeled "Underline" ( ) this handy little feature allows you to forget about the %%u that used to have to go in front of your text. If you want the text to be underlined simply check the box. This will underline the entire text shown in the "Text" box. If you want only a portion of the text underlined you will have to type %%u before and after the portion of the text you want underlined in the box above.

Navigation in this dialog The text value of the first attribute will always be highlighted when this dialog first opens since this is usually the most edited property of the block. To go to the text value from the next attribute press <Tab>, the <Tab> key will take you to each successive text value down the list and then to the button.

Example: Let us assume that you just need to change the text value of the first two attributes. When the above dialog appears the text value for the first attribute is highlighted so you may just start typing the new value for it. When you are done typing in the new value press <Tab> and the second attribute's text value will be highlighted. Type in the new value for the second attribute and then press <Enter>. The dialog will close and the attribute values will change to those entered in the dialog.

To edit the height value for an attribute click in the height box and enter a new value in the box.

To select a new text style select the small down arrow to the right of the style box and select one of the styles from the list that appears. Scroll up or down as needed. Only the currently loaded text styles will appear in the list. See AutoCAD's help under the STYLE command for help with loading text styles.

To select the color click on the color rectangle and the color selection dialog will appear. See here for more on selecting colors.

To select the lineweight select the small down arrow to the right of the lineweight box and select one of the lineweights from the list that appears. Scroll up or down as needed (lineweight property only available in release 2000 and later).

If we had selected more than one attribute and if the attributes had different values for one or more of their properties the value shown in the boxes of the differing properties would be *Varies*. Leave this value if you would like this property to stay unchanged in each of the attributes or change it to have this property changed in all of the attributes selected.

When done modifying the properties of the attributes press , or if one of the text value boxes is current (has the cursor in it) pressing <Enter> will also close the dialog.

--the attributes in the block(s) selected are changed to the values displayed in the dialog--
