A note on customizing blocks

It is highly recommended that when you want to customize a block that you make a copy of the original block and put the copy in the "Custom" folder. Edit the copy in the "Custom" folder leaving the original file intact. We also recommend that you place any new blocks you create in the "Custom" folder as well.

Put all new and customized blocks here so they will go with you when you upgrade.

When any of the APS commands look for a block they look in the custom folder first and then in either the Planblks or Elevblks folders. By doing this you keep a copy of the original file (just in case something should go wrong or you want to go back to the original) and you keep all of your customizations centrally located which makes it easier to take your customizations with you should you move to a new computer. Also, future version upgrades to the APS software will copy any customizations in the "Custom" folder and use them with the new software saving you the hassle of setting it up again.

Finding the Block

The keynote inserts the block drawing "aps-keyn.dwg". This drawing can be found in the Planblks folder. Make a copy of this drawing and place the copy in the Custom folder. Edit the copy in the Custom folder.

Editing the block

This block has some basic things to remember, they are:

Insertion point    It is recommended that you keep the insertion (base point) at 0,0,0. The insertion point of a block can be set while in the block drawing by typing BASE at the command prompt and selecting a point.

Layer    All of the entities in the block should be on layer 0 (zero). This allows the entities in the block to change their layer without exploding the block.

Color, linetype, and lineweight    Typically all of the entities should by "byblock" color, linetype and lineweight unless there are specific entities that should ALWAYS be a certain color, linetype, and/or lineweight. This allows the entities in the block have these properties modified without exploding the block.

Block scale    This block is drawn the size that it will be on the final plotted sheet. The KEYNOT commands that use this block scale it to the size needed for the scale of the drawing.

Modifying the attribute definition

For modifying the attribute definition's tag, prompt, default value, height, width factor, style, justification, oblique angle, color, and/or lineweight we recommend using the TXTEDT command.

Modifying the keynote shape and/or size

Just a helpful tip when changing the size or shape of the keynote symbol, keep the center of the symbol at 0,0 or move the symbol so that its center point is at 0,0 when done editing it. The "BASE" is set to 0,0 by default and placing the center of your block at the origin will allow your keynote to be inserted where you want it.

When done, make a note of the width and height of your block so we can tell the KEYNOT command where to start the leader. See below.

Saving the block drawing

Save the drawing as you normally would any other drawing, there are no special requirements when saving this block.

Changing the distance the leader starts from the center of the keynote

If you change the size or shape of the keynote block you must tell the KEYNOT command where to start the leader from.

To do this enter the width and height of your keynote block in the Arch Symbols section of the APS-CONFIG command.
